Modern Pascal Programming: 12 Advanced Pascal Programming Projects is the practical culmination of a three-book journey from learning Pascal to building serious software.
This book assumes that you already understand Pascal fundamentals, object-oriented programming, generics, databases, SQL, networking, REST and JSON, Lazarus, threads, exception handling, testing, and basic software architecture. Instead of reteaching those subjects, it puts them to work in substantial applications.
Across twelve progressively more complex projects, you will design and build applications such as a professional personal finance manager, weather and climate dashboard, LAN chat system, file indexing and search engine, log analysis system, inventory and order manager, REST API client, multithreaded download manager, task scheduler, database administration utility, system monitoring dashboard, and a complete multithreaded desktop application.
Along the way, you will work with application architecture, repositories, interfaces, SQLite, persistence, HTTP, JSON, networking, multithreading, thread-safe queues, caching, serialization, configuration, logging, testing, security, error recovery, performance, and cross-platform programming.
The projects are deliberately connected rather than being twelve isolated code exercises. Infrastructure introduced earlier can be reused in later projects, allowing you to develop a coherent Pascal programming toolkit as the book progresses.
The final project, Pascal Operations Center, brings together nearly everything learned in the preceding projects. It serves as a practical final examination of the reader's ability to decide which techniques belong together, design a larger application, test it, handle failures, and prepare it for release.
The goal is not merely to demonstrate that Pascal can still express modern programming techniques. The goal is to give you experience building substantial software with it.
