This guide to the collections invites us to explore three major periods that have marked Nîmes and its region. Providing a key to understanding the city's history, this museum is the gateway to understanding the exceptional heritage left by the civilisations that have succeeded one another here.

The pre-Roman era reveals a city in full expansion. It was during this period that the sanctuary around the sacred spring of La Fontaine, the cradle of the future. Nemausus, was born.

Then came the Roman era, which shaped the city in spectacular fashion. Under the Empire, Nîmes became a flourishing colony, adorned with iconic monuments: the amphitheatre, the remains of the Roman wall including the Magne tower, and the Maison Carrée, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Testaments to architectural grandeur and undeniable influence, these masterpieces continue to be a source of pride for the people of Nîmes.

Finally, after the fall of the Empire, Nîmes entered the Middle Ages, a period of change and restructuring.

While the Roman heritage remained, the city was transformed under the influence of new political and religious dynamics.
