Sam is an angry young man. His father was worthless and never cared about him. His mom was distracted just trying to provide for their needs. While young, his Gram watched him and gave him some spiritual foundations. But he became a rebel and a bully and caused a lot of trouble. Then he met Lily. She turned his head but wanted nothing to do with him. Can a young man change his whole way of being to win the girl of his dreams? Just as we start to see the answer to this question, the Viet Nam War happens.

Ben is a disappointed, angry, bitter man. His military career has left him with few friends and hardly any meaningful family connections. Married and divorced, his youngest daughter doesn't even know him. He's jealous of the older man who has married his ex. He uses his girlfriend but doesn't treat her right. He has little to live for and is spiraling downward in almost every way.
