Ochered' (The Queue) is a new collection by Iryna Yevsa, one of Ukraine's foremost Russian-language poets.
The war runs through these poems as their atmosphere rather than their subject. It is there in a wife clinging to her husband as he leaves for the front, in an old man who won't flee the shelling because of his canaries and a neurotic parrot, and in a refugee woman selling corn on a seaside beach. In the title poem, the dead wait in line at a white checkpoint, each with a name on their back: Bakhmut, Balakliia, Bucha.
Alongside these voices are the Eternal Cain and Abel, the Fates, Eden, and a God who "always lives on the sunny side." Written in classical stanzas with exact rhyme and living speech, Ochered' is a book about what remains of a person when their world collapses, and about what cannot be taken away.
Iryna Yevsa is a poet and translator, the author of fifteen books of poetry, and a winner of the Russian Prize, the Voloshin Prize, and the Kyiv Laurels prize. Born in Kharkiv, she has lived in Darmstadt since the war began.
