PTSD & Paramedics

First responders are trained to stay calm when the rest of the world is on fire. But what happens when the calls follow you home, when the scenes of horror replay at three o'clock in the morning, sleep becomes a distant memory, and you start to wonder if you're still the same person?

In PTSD & Paramedics: Get Treatment Without Breaking The Bank, paramedic Philip Habacon traces the slow build of cumulative trauma across a life in emergency care, from his childhood at Midtown General Hospital in the Philippines to the high-risk discipline of scuba diving in Thailand to frontline emergency calls in frigid Manitoba winters. After twelve years on the job, on October 31, 2023, he was forced to confront what he'd been in denial about for too long: he was deep in the throes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thus began the hard work of climbing back out of the abyss.

Far from a neat and tidy story of overcoming, this is an honest, lived-in account of what coping actually looks like-naming the injury, navigating treatment, and rebuilding day by day. Because recovery isn't about a single intervention; it's a way of life.

Grounded in The Dokkōdō ("The Path of the Loner"), a short work on philosophy by Japanese swordsman and strategist Miyamoto Musashi a week before he died in 1645, Philip offers something rare to first responders and the people who love them-clarity, permission to speak their truth, and proof that no matter how far you've fallen, there's always a way out.
