The implications of malfunctioning muscles has become an important topic in respiratory medicine. Respiratory muscles are severely affected, for example, by emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which are primarily diseases of the lung. Muscle malfunction can lead to severe dyspnoea and failure of the ventilatory pump.
