SALTWATER ECHOES
Listening for the Turtles
When an injured loggerhead sea turtle arrives at the Treasure Coast Marine Research Center, marine research intern Isabel Rivas expects to help document another case of an animal in trouble.
Instead, she discovers something that refuses to fit the official record.
The turtle, whom Isabel names Echo, bears injuries and traces that raise troubling questions about what happened in the water. As Isabel begins mapping turtle strandings and studying the evidence, she notices a pattern-one connected to a dredging project, changes in the water, unusual marine activity, and records that do not tell the whole story.
With each new discovery, Isabel finds herself caught between science and silence. Speaking up could threaten careers, relationships, livelihoods, and powerful interests along the coast. But remaining quiet could mean allowing the same harm to continue.
Joined by people who understand the ocean from very different perspectives-including fishermen, researchers, and members of her own family-Isabel learns that protecting the sea requires more than collecting data. It requires listening, asking difficult questions, following the evidence, and having the courage to tell the truth.
Saltwater Echoes is a compelling marine conservation story about science, community, family, courage, and the responsibility to protect the waters we share.
Because sometimes the ocean leaves an echo behind-and someone has to be willing to listen.
