Savage Gentlemen

"Savage Gentlemen" is an immersive and insightful account of four years spent among the indigenous tribes of the Philippines during the early twentieth century. Written by Mabel Cook Cole, an anthropologist who accompanied her husband on an extensive ethnological expedition, the work offers a rare, firsthand look at cultures that were largely misunderstood by the Western world at the time.

The narrative follows their journey through remote regions, from the mountain provinces of Luzon to the islands of the south, documenting the daily lives, complex traditions, and social structures of the Tinguian, Igorot, and other groups. Despite the fearsome contemporary reputation of "head-hunting" tribes, Cole reveals a community of people characterized by profound dignity, hospitality, and sophisticated moral codes. The title itself reflects this striking juxtaposition, challenging the prejudices of the era by highlighting the gentlemanly qualities found within these societies.

Through vivid storytelling and keen ethnographic observation, "Savage Gentlemen" captures a world in transition. It remains a significant historical and literary document for readers interested in Southeast Asian history, anthropology, and the nuances of cross-cultural encounter during the early 1900s.
