As Visual Culture has emerged as a field of study over the past three decades or so, it has drawn extensively on theoretical paradigms originally developed in French, German and other national contexts. At the same time, research in the interdisciplinary fields of languages and cultures has played a decisive role in shaping Visual Culture studies by decentring and interrogating the critical assumptions of a domain that tends towards Anglophone, Anglo-centric and Euro-centric reflexes.
Seeing in Tongues takes stock of the distinctive contribution to Visual Culture studies made by scholars working within and across varied cultural and linguistic contexts, which lies not simply in understanding how images work within different national contexts, but also in its sensitivity to the broader dynamics of intercultural contact, transnational movement, and border crossings both literal and figurative. Mapping the contours of visual economies within and between cultures illuminates the transversal nature and history of image flows, as well as the forces and factors that shape their circulation.
