Shadows and Rumors is the first volume of an epic series. Many more will follow.

The world it is set in is post-cataclysmic. A curse from the great evil has left the landscape, and everything that ever lived in it, dead. Beasts of evil roam the wastes. The dead who fell on the day of the curse no longer rest - they walk, they hunger, they prey upon the living. They are the sorken.

The living are only living because Yonah touches them with his essence. The old word for it is Shemen - his breath, lent to dust that would otherwise lie still. Without it, every man, woman, and child in this world would join the sorken in the wastes.

Their bodies are sustained by the only water that still flows: the Basar River. It issues from the great mountain - a moon-sized rock that fell from the heavens in an age long past. When it came down, there was nothing left to kill. The world was already dead. The mountain came as an invasion of life into the kingdom of death.

From its base, life has spread outward. Animals graze in its shadow. Plants grow where its water touches the ground. Health flows from the rock. Along the river and its many branches, people have raised settlements - homes, walls, places where the living can stand together against the dark that surrounds them.

This is the world of Sorken.
