Spiritual and mental concepts of the Maori

Step into the heart of early 1900s Maori society, where the unseen world shapes the visible. Elsdon Best's *Spiritual and Mental Concepts of the Maori* offers a rare, first-hand exploration of indigenous spiritual beliefs and traditional Maori practices, illuminating the mental and spiritual concepts that guided New Zealand's first peoples. More than a study, it is a portal-revealing the depth of Maori mythology and folklore, and the intricate ways in which belief and ritual wove through everyday life.

A cornerstone of Maori cultural studies and early 20th century anthropology, this volume stands as an essential resource for scholars of indigenous cultures, anthropology students, and anyone drawn to comparative indigenous studies. Best's careful documentation, drawn from years among Maori communities, captures a world both ancient and enduring-its customs, cosmology, and the subtle interplay of mind and spirit. His work remains foundational for understanding New Zealand indigenous history and the intellectual traditions that continue to shape Aotearoa.
