This book addresses the problem of LGBTQ persons reportedly affected by substance use disorders at a rate that is 2 to 3 times higher than that of the general population. The study population is also disproportionately affected by co-occurring mental health issues and were twice as likely to report histories of sexual, emotional, or physical abuse. This book examines substance use disorders in LGBTQ persons from biological, psychological, and sociological perspectives, including stressors and coping strategies of LGBTQ persons living in a heteronormative society. The book explores outcomes and etiology linked to the combination of LGBTQ-specific stressors and the linkage to substance use disorders. The findings from this study indicate a need for therapeutic considerations in recognizing differences in LGBTQ versus non-LGBTQ persons and how therapists can employ approaches, interventions, and prevention strategies for LGBTQ persons.
