This edited volume focuses on the health and well-being of India's tribal populations in the context of SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing. It critically analyzes the opportunities, challenges, policy gaps, and interventions related to achieving health equity for tribal communities.
Achieving sustainable development means ensuring that development in all dimensions includes everyone, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. Among these, India's tribal populations continue to face persistent socio-economic and health inequalities. Despite India's national progress in public health, the country's tribal communities remain significantly underserved and marginalized in terms of access to quality healthcare. As global health goals face mounting challenges-ranging from high maternal mortality to insufficient access to essential health services-vulnerable populations such as tribal groups suffer disproportionately. These disparities are further worsened by climate change, environmental degradation, and social exclusion.
Through interdisciplinary contributions from scholars, public health professionals, policymakers, and community practitioners, this book will bridge the gap between global health frameworks and the local realities faced by tribal populations. The objective is not only to document the challenges but also to present evidence-based strategies, innovative practices, and actionable solutions that can contribute to sustainable improvements in tribal health outcomes.
