Nine-year-old Ella Finnegan is visited at night by an old man, Gramps. On the last night before he leaves, Gramps asks Ella to do something for him in the future. Something he does not describe. Out of great love for him, she agrees. As the years go by without an appearance from him, Ella comes to believe he was imaginary. Unknown to her are the imaginary encounters that other people important to her have had. People who shape and move her toward Gramp's unknown request. A request that will reveal the nature of Gramps and require Ella to use her greatest strength when she is farthest from it.
