First published in 1936, Joseph L. Colby's American Pit Bull Terrier is a foundational work that offers an in-depth look at the history, breeding, and character of the breed. Drawing from firsthand experience and extensive knowledge, Colby-a prominent breeder and authority of his time-provides practical advice on training, care, and the unique qualities that define the American Pit Bull Terrier. This classic text remains a valuable resource for enthusiasts, breeders, and anyone interested in understanding of this American breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is indeed an American breed, though its roots trace back to England, Ireland, and Scotland.
Here's a quick rundown of its origins:
- The breed developed in the 19th century from crosses between bulldogs and terriers, originally bred in the British Isles for bull-baiting and later dog fighting.
- Immigrants brought these dogs to the United States, where they were further refined and selectively bred for strength, loyalty, and athleticism.
- In the U.S., the breed evolved into what we now know as the American Pit Bull Terrier, distinct from its British ancestors.
The book includes discussion of dog fighting, as it was written during a time when the breed's historical association with fighting was still openly acknowledged and, in some circles, even accepted. This is no longer the case. Some of the content discusses professional dog fighting.
