The Blue River

In the Maya city of Ch'altun, blue is not decoration. It is civic speech, brushed onto stone, pressed into wax, and trusted at a glance.

When pigment supplies are sabotaged and a courier turns up marked by the very color the city depends on, Ix Ch'elel must separate ordinary contamination from the impossible blue that can only appear if a boundary has been breached.

With the weary herald Ch'ok, the craftsman Aj Uc, the scribe Tepeu, and the road reader Old K'in, Ix follows the chain: jars, cords, soot layers, invoices, witness marks, and the thin seam where authority can be flexed without breaking.

As public pressure builds toward a fast conclusion, she must do what Ch'altun resists most. Slow the story down. Make the city watch. Force proof to happen in daylight, on stone, under rules everyone understands. In a metropolis where record keeping is as political as prayer, the central problem is not that blue is everywhere. It is that if blue is everywhere, it can be used to hide anything.
