Every other book in this category is a curriculum for the child. This one is entirely for you - including the hour you hope never comes.
Two things get skipped by every safety book on the shelf. How to run these conversations without handing your child your own fear. And what to do, in order, if your child ever tells you something.
Most parents have rehearsed nothing for that moment. The first hour matters enormously, and several of the instincts that feel most natural in it are the ones that do damage.
PART ONE - THE CONVERSATIONS
- Why "be careful" does nothing, and what to say instead
- Your own fear, and how it transmits - your steadiness is the actual curriculum
- The right age for each thing, and why earlier is calmer
- Body autonomy without awkwardness, including with relatives who insist on hugs
- Secrets, surprises, and the one rule that covers most of it
- Teaching the funny feeling - intuition as data, and permission to be wrong about it
- Safe adults, online without a lecture, and the five-minute conversations that beat one big talk
PART TWO - THE FIRST HOUR
- What disclosure actually looks like - rarely a clear statement, usually sideways, often at bedtime or in the car
- The first sixty seconds - your face, your voice, and four sentences written out for you to have ready
- What not to ask - and why a parent's questions can damage both the child and any later investigation. This is the single most useful chapter in the book
- Writing it down - what to record, in whose words, and when
- Who to contact and in what order
- The days after: school, siblings, routine
- If it was a long time ago, if you are not sure, if the child takes it back
THE ONE PAGE
Near the front there is a single page listing, in order, what to do and what not to do in the first hour. It is written to be read by someone whose hands are shaking.
WHAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO
It will not frighten you into action. No statistics, no case studies, no horror stories, no descriptions of what happens to children - patterns are described as behaviour. It is not built on stranger danger, and it never suggests handling it privately or waiting to see. It says plainly that a parent who missed the signs is not to blame, because guilt makes parents act worse in that hour, not better.
