A drowned man is standing at the tideline in his own coat. He is not angry. He has simply come to be paid.

Thirty years ago, on a cold northern shore, a young fisherman cut a man loose to save a boat. The village watched it happen from the beach and said nothing - then, or ever since.

Now the keeper who serviced that coast's old accounts is dead, the payments have stopped, and the sea has begun to collect. In Norse folklore the draugr is the drowned man who walks back onto the land: not a ghost, not a spirit, but a debt with a body. They come out of the water one at a time, in their own clothes, mild as morning. They cannot be fought. They cannot be bought. They stand at the waterline until the account is settled.

Harald knows exactly what is owed. He has known for thirty years. And the dead man on the shore is not looking at him - he is looking at the lit window of Harald's house, where his daughter is sitting up late.
