The First Fracture

Eighteen-year-old Hayley and Sabrina have plans beyond their grandmother's house on Chicago's South Side. Paying for those plans is another matter.

It is January 2027. In Rosa's Englewood kitchen, a failing furnace can consume the money meant for a fresh start. With their father dead and their mother estranged through addiction, the twins have learned how much they depend on each other-and how easily that dependence can become resentment.

Then a wealthy young man offers Hayley a glimpse of a life where money makes problems disappear. When his family's help reaches their grandmother's kitchen table, Sabrina wants to know what accepting it will cost.

As the sisters' lives pull in different directions, work becomes less dependable and the distance between security and hardship grows. The country's troubles arrive in reduced hours, loan terms, and choices that leave someone they love paying the difference.

The First Fracture opens the American Collapse trilogy with an intimate, unsettling story of family loyalty, class, and the struggle to build a future in a country becoming harder to trust.
