You will never be told that you are losing.

Not by a headline. Not by a phone call. Not by anyone.

Your statement arrives. The number at the bottom is larger than it was last quarter, and you feel the small warm satisfaction of a person whose plan is working.

The number climbs. What it buys shrinks. Both facts sit on the same page, politely, for years, and never once introduce themselves.

That is how most people invest. Not recklessly. Pleasantly, and in the dark.

The stock market only ever asks four questions. What to buy. When to buy. How much to buy. When to sell. Every chart, every headline, every man on your screen shouting about a breakout is one of those four wearing a costume.

Almost nobody answers them on purpose. They answer them at eleven at night, on a phone, because somebody confident said something on the internet.

And answering in the moment is expensive. Four out of every seven companies ever listed on the American stock market returned less, over their entire lifetimes, than a savings account. Nobody mentions that when they recommend you a stock.

The Gap is four chapters, one for each question, answered with published research rather than opinion, including the research that argues against its own conclusions. No tips. No forecasts. No system with a name.

One of the four questions does not survive the book. It disappears somewhere near the end, and readers almost never guess which one.

Sriram Saravanan is a Canadian personal finance author and investor based in Toronto, and the author of The Game of Percentage and The Effortless Investor. He began investing in 2019, worked at it seriously for three years, and discovered on converting his results into a percentage that he had matched a bank deposit. Everything he has written since comes out of that afternoon.

The Gap is the third book in The Investor's Trilogy. Each stands alone.
