Michael Sheridan has spent thirty years depending on no one. A Navy veteran wired by trauma to scan for threats, he manages his ranch, checks his locks, and watches his community fracture from a careful distance. When Pine Ridge's school board erupts into open conflict - tribal sovereignty against county authority, traditional knowledge against outside expertise, old families against new arrivals - Michael sees what he's always seen: a system pushed past tolerance, about to fail.

Set in a rural California community at the intersection of wildfire, water rights, and deep political division, The House Divided follows four neighbors as they discover that their conflict is not the problem - the absence of structure for the conflict is. As a tribal fire expert, a climate scientist, a volunteer fire chief, and a ranching veteran slowly build something no one expected - a functional local institution that requires them to be necessary to each other - they learn that a community doesn't develop by resolving its differences. It develops by learning to work through them.
Then a wildfire exposes how badly that work is still unfinished. And a county administrator who has been waiting for exactly this failure moves to shut the whole experiment down.
The House Divided is a novel about community-based democracy practiced at a human scale - unremarkable, imperfect, and harder than anyone expects. About what it costs when different kinds of knowledge can't hear each other. About a man who ran toward a burning aircraft because that was the job, and what it takes to finally let someone else into the room.
