Nearly eighty companies pursued the same idea. Only one became Mercado Libre.
In 1999, Marcos Galperin left Stanford with a plan for an online marketplace in Latin America. The idea was not original. Competitors were already racing across the region, internet access was scarce, payments were fragmented and reliable delivery could not be taken for granted.
Mercado Libre began in borrowed space beneath a family building in Buenos Aires. It raised millions before proving that strangers would trade online, survived the collapse of the dot-com boom and formed an alliance with the company it had copied: eBay. What followed was not the triumph of a perfect founding vision. It was twenty-six years of adaptation.
When buyers and sellers could not trust one another, Mercado Libre entered payments. When packages failed to arrive, it entered logistics. When merchants lacked capital, it began lending. Each solution removed a constraint, created new information and pulled the company deeper into the economy.
What began as an online auction site became infrastructure through which millions of people could buy, sell, pay, ship, borrow, save and advertise. Mercado Libre did not simply participate in Latin American commerce. It helped reorganize it.
Along the way, Galperin learned from PayPal, borrowed Amazon's promise of fast and seemingly free delivery, rebuilt Mercado Libre's technology and repeatedly sacrificed current profits for capabilities whose value might take years to appear. The company widened economic access while accumulating extraordinary private power.
The Idea Was Not Unique is the story of the people, arguments, failures and decisions behind one of Latin America's defining companies. It is also the story of a founder who pursued independence by accumulating control-and who eventually had to decide whether the institution he built could become independent of him.
