The Last Gate of Shadow Island

Six years ago, Kairo's father vanished without a word. Now Kairo has found the map he left behind.
Twelve-year-old Kairo has spent half his life with questions nobody will answer. Then, one quiet afternoon, he finds the door to his grandfather's storage room unlocked for the first time. Inside sits a dust-free wooden chest. In the chest is his father's journal. Tucked into the journal is a scorched map of an island that appears on no chart, with three words written underneath:
DO NOT FOLLOW.
Kairo follows.
He takes his grandfather's old boat, the Heron, and sails out at night. His compass spins, a thick fog swallows the sea, and an island rises out of the mist.
On Shadow Island, the trees seem to watch him. Symbols carved in stone light up when he touches them. A voice he can't see tells him to turn back. Then a storm smashes his only way home.
The path leads deep underground, to a lost city and a guardian made of stone. Beyond them stands the Last Gate. Everyone who has ever walked through it has stayed.
Kairo came for the truth about his father. Now he must decide what that truth is worth.
