The Life You Chose

A photograph appears on Daniel Mercer's kitchen table. The man in it is unmistakably him, twenty-five years older. The people beside him are strangers. His wife and daughter are absent.

The message on the back gives him thirty days.

Daniel doesn't remember choosing this life. He begins looking for the people in the picture, then for the sources of the photographs that follow. A burned house. A borrowed face. His own dinner table, photographed from an impossible position. Each discovery brings him closer to a real person and further from the family he thought the first image promised.

Meanwhile, Claire and Lucy must live inside his investigation. A stranger has reached into their home; Daniel's search reaches into every conversation. Finding an explanation starts to feel like the condition for returning to his own life.

Combining an unsettling premise with the closeness of a family novel, The Life You Chose explores what photographs reveal, what they conceal, and how certainty can become another way of losing sight of the people we love.
