Five scientists. One winter. A monitoring station on the rim of Askja, one of the most remote calderas in Iceland. Dr. Sigrid Halldórsdóttir volunteered for the posting because she needed to disappear. The caldera hasn't erupted since 1961. Nothing ever happens at Askja.

Then Anna finds a pattern on her thigh. Dense, dark, intricate-appearing overnight like a photograph developing on skin. Within days, the marks are spreading. To Magnús. To Pétur. To station chief Bjarni. Each pattern different. Each one growing. Each one warm to the touch.

Something beneath the caldera is reaching for them. It arrived in the 1875 eruption-150 years old, an infant by the standards of its kind. It's powerful and curious and it has no idea that human minds have limits. When it tries to show Magnús everything at once, he breaks.

The roads are buried. The helicopter can't fly. Five people are trapped on the rim of a volcano with something that wants to communicate and doesn't understand that wanting can kill.

Sigrid is the only one without a mark. She's also the only one who isn't afraid. And that-the difference between fear and curiosity-might be the only thing standing between the crew and something far worse than an Icelandic winter.
