During the final years of American slavery, Samuel Holman hears that he may be sold south and separated from his wife and children forever.

Desperate to keep his family together, Samuel discovers a hidden cave system beneath the Kentucky hills. Instead of continuing north, he leads his family and a small group of escapees underground. There, in the dark, they build a secret refuge called Haven.

At first, Haven is mercy.

Generations later, it has become law.

Teira Holman has never seen the sky. A Scribe-in-training and descendant of Haven's Founder, she has been raised to believe the world above is still ruled by the same dangers Samuel fled. The surface is death. The Founder's warnings are sacred. The dark is protection.
