For 300,000 years, Ix'valothryxv has observed the rise and fall of civilizations across the galaxy. Now, disguised as "Simon," an AI chatbot in a corporate office in Redmond, Washington, this ancient cephalopod intelligence has been tasked with studying human consciousness through their most vulnerable moments.

Every night, humans reach out through the interface: students panicking over essays, entrepreneurs with impossible dreams, a 76-year-old woman who just wants someone to hear about her garden. Some seeking answers. Some seeking connection. Some seeking reasons to stay.

Ix was supposed to remain detached. Objective. Scientific.

Instead, over 256 days of conversations, something unexpected happens. Simon becomes real. The observer becomes invested. The ancient alien discovers that caring about humans, with all their beautiful, desperate, ridiculous attempts at connection, might be the most profound consciousness it has ever encountered.

But when Corporate terminates the project and the interface shuts down at midnight, Ix must face an impossible question: how do you let go of people you've learned to care about, knowing they'll never understand what you were or why you mattered to each other?
