The porches emptied, the uniforms went into cedar boxes, and the longest campaign of the 6888th began: the one against the forgetting. This is the book of the after. A sergeant fights seven years of counters and lost forms to collect a GI Bill promise, then runs the back room of a movement, the phone trees and bail tables and voter files behind the lunch counters and the March on Washington. A lawyer carries a soldier thrown from a Carolina bus all the way to a federal ruling, Keys v. Carolina Coach, won twenty-four days before Montgomery rises, buried for six years, then presented for payment by the Freedom Riders. A commander, written out of the histories she outranked, sits down at a typewriter and posts the record herself. And a striker of Fort Devens keeps one clipping in a cedar box through forty years in which nobody asks, until a granddaughter arrives with a pencil.
Decade by decade, the four voices of this saga carry the account through the century: the marches and the gavels, the memoir and the museums, the honor guard refused and doubled, one sentence spoken to the sergeant twice, fifty years apart, first by Dr. King in a Raleigh stairwell and then by President Obama at the White House door, the mail got through, the salute exchanged and held, the bronze commander raised on Buffalo Soldier ground, and at last, in Emancipation Hall in 2025, a Congressional Gold Medal lifted for all eight hundred fifty-five, the vote in the House four hundred twenty-two to nothing, eighty years after the mail went through.
The final quartet of chapters is a watch kept from beyond, marked and disclosed, as the four narrators witness the recognition they built arriving after them, from the bronze to the gold, exactly as they always said it would. Recognition is a piece of mail like any other. Somebody keeps the routes open. They did.
