The Return

He escaped the city. He discovered freedom. Now he must risk everything to return.

Joseph Townsend has spent nearly a year building a life beyond the walls of Block Seventeen. In Harrowfield, he has found meaningful work, genuine friendships and something he once believed impossible: a future of his own choosing.

But the people he left behind have not been forgotten.

Inside the city, compulsory relocations threaten thousands of residents. Dangerous transport arrangements, conflicting orders and a system more concerned with recording compliance than protecting lives are pushing the city towards disaster.

When Joseph learns what is happening, he faces a choice that could cost him the freedom he fought so hard to gain.

Returning means entering a place where his name carries consequences, where the truth is buried beneath generations of records, and where changing even one procedure can threaten the foundations of an entire institution.

But Joseph has learned that the greatest danger is not always the person giving an order. Sometimes it is the system that allows nobody to question it.

Can a city built on obedience learn to give its people a choice?

The Return: Block 17 is the conclusion to Joseph Townsend's story in The Departure trilogy. A powerful, character-driven dystopian novel exploring institutional power, collective responsibility and the difficult work of meaningful change.
