An old university friend, Tim Lovejoy, invites archaeologist Martin Day to visit his excavation on the summit of Stelida, Naxos's double-peaked hill, where a Bronze Age sanctuary site is revealing extraordinary secrets. A bone is found where it should not be, and Tim fears that the international press will seize on this to claim that the Ancient Greeks performed human sacrifice, bringing scandal and misinformation to his important excavation. Everything depends on the findings of the experts who analyse ancient bones. The bone turns out to be human and relatively modern, and a police investigation follows. Meanwhile in Athens a young girl from Ukraine is being forced to work for the criminal underworld, and her unlikely rescuers are a middle aged archaeologist, Day himself, and a hippy musician, Day's brother-in-law. When the criminals follow the girl to Naxos prepared to go to any lengths to get her back, Day has to find his physical courage, but in doing so, and in discovering the traditional music of the islands, he intuitively forms a theory about a crime that has lain hidden for decades.
