Felix Vance has spent most of his seventeen years repairing boats, stretching coins, and pretending his father's injured hand has not left their family one bad winter away from losing everything.
Then an alchemical wash burns through Felix's glove and leaves his bare palm untouched.
Someone sees.
The invitation arrives sealed in golden wax. The Guild of Fenticards offers Felix a room in Vasclaire, paid training, and enough money sent home to keep his family afloat. All he has to do is learn the work, follow the rules, and earn his way through the Guild's six Circles.
At first, that feels like more than he ever dared to want.
But the cards begin doing things no one will explain. A message appears where no writing should be. An apprentice's name has been scraped from the Guild's history. Felix's mother warns him not to ask about the seventh-and never to show anyone the old seven-pointed medallion he carries beneath his shirt.
Felix is good at noticing when something has been repaired badly enough to hide the damage. Inside the Guild, the seams are beginning to show.
He came to Vasclaire to save his family. Now he needs to discover what happened to the apprentices who came before him-and why the Guild seems to have been waiting for his hands.
