The Social Mission of Charity

"The Social Mission of Charity: A Study of Points of View in Catholic Charities" is a landmark study that examines the philosophical and practical foundations of Catholic social service. Written by William J. Kerby, a foundational figure in the development of modern social work, the text explores the intersection of religious obligation and organized social reform. It seeks to define the unique role of the Catholic Church in addressing the complex social problems of the early 20th century, advocating for a transition from simple almsgiving to a more structured, professionalized approach to welfare.

The work provides deep insights into the theological motivations behind charity, the importance of institutional efficiency, and the necessity of scientific sociology in understanding poverty and human suffering. By articulating a clear vision for the mission of the Church in the public sphere, Kerby addresses the needs of the individual and the community alike. "The Social Mission of Charity" is an essential resource for scholars of religious history, social work, and the history of American philanthropy, offering a timeless perspective on the moral imperative to serve the vulnerable with both compassion and expertise.
