The Tale of Grounds

A beautiful story that shows why nature and wild places matter. It works on both a personal level and across long periods of history. When I finished Land, I was moved not only by the people in the story but also by the powerful presence of the moss, water, wind, and sky.

In 1865, on a windy peninsula on Ireland's Atlantic coast, tom and his son are helping with a project to create detailed maps of all of Ireland. The country is still suffering from the effects of the Great Famine, and the work is difficult. Tomás wants his maps to show the damage and loss caused by that tragedy.

British soldiers are expected to arrive soon to check that the work is finished. But after a strange experience in a small forest, His life changes completely. He wonders what happened to Tomás and how he can finish the mapping work and get them both safely home.
It is a story about loss and reunion, sadness and healing, British rule and Irish resistance. It includes hidden treasure, connected lives, ancient forests, lingering ghosts, a very loyal dog, and the idea that the past never truly disappears. Inspired by the natural landscape, it is ultimately a story about survival and endurance.
