The Theatre of George Jean Nathan Chapters and Documents Toward a History of the New American Drama

"The Theatre of George Jean Nathan" is an insightful exploration of the life and critical impact of one of America's most influential drama critics. Written by Isaac Goldberg, this work serves as both a biography and a historical survey of the movement known as the New American Drama that emerged during the early 20th century. Through a series of analytical chapters and primary documents, Goldberg examines the profound influence Nathan exerted on the theatrical landscape, his uncompromising standards for dramatic art, and his advocacy for European modernist playwrights as well as native American talents.

The volume provides a meticulous study of Nathan's critical methodology and his role in elevating the status of the American stage from mere entertainment to a serious literary form. By analyzing Nathan's contributions alongside contemporary documents, Goldberg offers readers a unique perspective on the evolution of modern drama and the personalities who defined its character. This work remains a vital resource for those interested in the history of theater criticism, the development of American letters, and the intellectual currents that shaped the Broadway stage during its most transformative era.
