The Chinese have pondered for millennia what force seemingly changed the course of the upper Yangtze River (Jinsha Jiang, the Gold Sand River), racing southward off the uplifting Tibetan Plateau in far western China, to abruptly turn eastward to flow then through Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai - the heartland of China.
