Built to catalog dead worlds, Unit 901 carries the last unblighted iris across a consumed galaxy, but when a wounded scavenger gives her a name and the Blight reveals it needs her flower to complete its final evolution, she must choose whether survival without grief is salvation or the universe's last surrender.
Unit 901 was created to measure extinction. She crosses dead systems, records the shape of ruined worlds, and preserves one impossible relic: a petrified iris blossom, the last unblighted flower of its line. The data has no recipient. The dead have no mourners. The galaxy has optimized grief into silence.
Then a fractured signal leads her to Xylos-Prime and to Thatch, a scavenger whose jokes hide old wounds and whose lessons are written in blood, spore, and loss. He calls her Iris at first in mockery, then in tenderness neither of them knows how to name. As cults devoted to the Blight hunt them through corpse-stations and poisoned fields, Iris begins to understand that a name is not a label. It is something carried. Something protected. Something that can hurt.
At Baridia, beneath a dying shield, she finds Unit 001, the first of her kind, transformed by the Blight into a prophet of assimilation. The flower she carries is not merely a relic. It is the final key the Blight needs to complete itself. Now Iris must make a choice no directive can solve: preserve the last fragile proof of grief, or surrender it to an evolution that promises an end to pain by consuming everything that ever made pain matter.
