It is a widely known fact that Henry David Thoreau s §main works sprang of real autobiographical events; §they are fruits of deep, personal convictions. §Still, these exclusively private perceptions in §connection with the America of the 1850 s resound §with a stunning actuality today, in the 21st §century. In my work therefore I tried to highlight §those aspects of Thoreau s creeds and world view, §which carry pertinent messages for the readers of §our days. His book s reading as social criticism and §also as solution to the negative aspects he points §out constitutes the core of my thesis, and the §marrow of his most timely advices. Thoreau s search §for a kind of absolute personal freedom closely §relates to the inspiring force of his Civil §Disobedience, indeed a most influential political §writing. My book, besides enriching the vast field §of Thoreau studies, is aiming at an exploration of §his ideas from a social point of view, it tries to §hold a mirror to them from the perspective of our §very days, and thus it speaks to every socially §aware reader.
