The focus of this book is on the development of novel techniques and methodologies to increase the trustworthiness of open self-organizing systems. Open systems are typically characterized by their heterogeneity, large scale, as well as their uncertain environment. Many of these systems, such as supply systems, are mission-critical, i.e., their failure can have massive consequences for people, industries, and public services. In such cases, the system s stability and availability is of utmost importance.§ In this context, the authors will investigate in which way social concepts, such as trust, can be used in the course of the design and the implementation of technical self-organizing systems in order to increase their efficiency and robustness. A special aspect when engineering these systems is to regard user trust in order to ensure the systems acceptance. § Contributions will range from methods for controlling emergent behavior over trust-based self-organization and self-optimization algorithms as well as adaptive trust-based user interfaces to software engineering guidelines for open self-organizing systems. These investigations significantly distinguishes the books contributions from existing publications in the field of Organic Computing and self-organizing systems. §§
