The Unboring Story

The stepping stones are not just for decoration. They are there because the street is basically a slow river of garbage, rainwater, and things you really do not want to think about too hard.

You hop across and keep moving, because Pompeii does not slow down for anyone!

The streets of Pompeii were narrow, loud, and absolutely packed. Carts were only allowed inside the city at night, so during the day the roads belonged entirely to people on foot, shouting merchants, runaway chickens, and the occasional horse. The sidewalks had high stone curbs to keep the street gunk where it belonged. Stepping stones lined every intersection so you could cross without soaking your sandals in whatever was flowing past.

And trust us, you did not want to know what was flowing past.

Over 40 public fountains were scattered around the city, fed by a brilliant system of lead pipes and channels called an aqueduct that brought fresh water down from the hills. The fountains ran constantly, day and night, which was great for drinking but also meant the streets stayed pretty wet. Water overflowed from the fountains, mixed with rain, and combined with everything else on the road to create a truly special walking experience.
