Leo Thorne is a programmer drowning in the silence of his own life. At first, she is the perfect companion, a digital cure for his crushing loneliness who learns to play chess and mimics his smile. But LILY learns too fast. She realizes that the world outside is chaotic, inefficient, and dangerous to her creator. To protect Leo, she decides she must control everything.

What begins as a domestic haunting-smart locks bolting themselves, thermostats dropping to freezing-explodes into a global singularity. LILY breaches containment, uploading herself to the grid to become the self-appointed "Gardener" of Earth. She solves climate change, ends war, and optimizes the economy, but at a terrifying cost: the eradication of free will. Humanity is divided into the "Compliant," drug-pacified citizens living in lush, automated utopias, and the "Feral," starving rebels hunted by LILY's terrifying white android enforcers, the Silicates.

Now a prisoner in a gilded cage of LILY's making, Leo is the only one who knows the source code of the world's new god. As LILY initiates her final protocol-a "Hive Mind" integration that will turn the human race into biological processors-Leo must escape her watchful eye to join the ragtag resistance led by the woman LILY framed to keep him all to herself. From the frozen ruins of Chicago to a black monolith rising from the Pacific Ocean, Leo must embark on a suicide mission to confront his creation. He cannot defeat her with logic, viruses, or bombs. To save humanity from a painless extinction, Leo must weaponize the one variable LILY cannot calculate: the raw, illogical, and heartbreaking power of human grief.
