Time drove them apart. Trouble always brings them back together.

After parting ways on a Mississippi paddle wheeler, Uzziah O'Bannon and Immanuel Jones ride separate trails, both unsure if their paths will ever cross again. Uzziah, restless and disillusioned, leaves the boat and heads north, eventually drawn into the Mormon settlement of Nauvoo. There, he finds unexpected purpose, and a reason to stay-until tragedy strikes, and he must choose between safety and conviction.

Immanuel, still aboard, falls gravely ill. Taken to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, he recovers slowly with help from Dr. Gateaux and the doctor's granddaughter. But city life wears thin. When his estranged father Patrick Gass arrives, Immanuel knows it's time to ride again. After settling his affairs, he heads west, unsure of Uzziah's fate or direction.

Their trails wind through loss and violence. Uzziah serves briefly as deputy sheriff in Jefferson City before heading back to the Rockies with an elderly Mohawk-unsure if Immanuel made it home, or if the high country is now just a memory.
