For a war that would be over by Christmas, the new year of 1915 saw the world still at war. The first Zeppelin raids took place on London in January. Troops were bogged down in the trenches of Flanders and France and the war had become a stalemate. Submarine warfare continued unabated and Allied losses were beginning to have an effect, as was the British blockade by sea of Germany. Gas was used at Ypres for the first time and warfare stooped to a new low. A new front was opened in the Dardanelles and the sinking of the Lusitania off Ireland in May saw America edge closer to war on the side of the Allies. The end of the year saw heavy casualties on both sides and an Allied withdrawal from the Dardanelles began. Little had been achieved in the West but the Eastern Front saw German and Austro-Hungarian victories in Serbia, Poland and against the Russians, while Italy had entered the war on the side of the Allies. 250 images tell the story of 1915, the second year of the war to end all wars.
